Convenient Solar was founded by three friends with diverse backgrounds: a heating/cooling/solar contractor, an outdoorsman with a large landscaping business and a corporate veteran from the computer, consumer electronics, and alternative energy industries. Each of the friends has started and run multiple companies.

People have been building solar generators for years. The component pieces can be purchased at electronics, automotive and online stores. While easily available, working with these components can be dangerous for untrained people. The contractor built one for a particular landscaping project so the external lights could be solar powered, staying on even when the grid went down.

A family member in a neighborhood plagued by storm-caused power outages heard about the system and asked if one could be made for his family for residential usage. He said that all the homeowners on his street wanted one too. Obviously this wasn't a scientific sampling, but the idea of 100% of residents on one street willing to buy a particular product got all three friends thinking that there was a ready market for a safe and simple product at a good price.

After a few months of research and design work, the company was founded to manufacture and sell, as its name suggests, convenient solar power products. Go-Plug is the company's first product.
